Anti-spam threshold

The spam threshold determines how strict the anti-spam system will be when judging whether an email may or may not be spam. There are over 600 rules against which any email is tested. Some of these include:

  • Email contains words typical of spam email (such as Opt In, Opt Out, or Free).
  • Email uses unnecessarily large numbers of exclamation marks.
  • Email does not have a real name in the reply address.
  • Email has a fake reply email address.

The higher the threshold is set to, the more spam tests an email has to fail before it gets marked as spam.

Cloud Hosting filter settings

The filter settings available in the Cloud Hosting anti-spam system allows users to

  • Control the activation or deactivation of the spam quarantine system
  • Adjust the quarantine threshold
  • Adjust the tag threshold
  • Perform or skip an SPF check
  • Adjust how the server responses to emails it sends into quarantine

Below is a table explaining what each of the settings do

SettingDescription
Quarantine enabledThis allows users to disable or enable the spam quaratine. If disabled, all emails will arrive in the inbox and not be scanned for spam.
Quarantine thresholdSet the minimum score that a message must receive in order to be classified as unsure (and therefore notated) by the content analysis portion of the filter. The score ranges from 0.0 (certainly not spam) to 1.0 (certainly spam). This must be lower than the spam threshold.
Tag thresholdSet the minimum score that a message must receive in order to be classified as unsure (and therefore notated) by the content analysis portion of the filter. The score ranges from 0.0 (certainly not spam) to 1.0 (certainly spam). This must be lower than the spam threshold.
Skip SPF checkSPF is a common technology that allows the sender to indicate which IPs are allowed to deliver email for the sender domain. This check can be disabled by ticking this box, we recommend to keep it enabled to block spam.
Skip maximum line length checkThere are strict regulations on allowed line length in emails, which are automatically enforced by the email software. Some applications or badly developed scripts do not adhere to the official specifications thereby exceeding the maximum allowed line-length. This check can be disabled by ticking this box, we recommend to keep it enabled to block spam.
Unsure NotationPrepend this tag to the subject of messages which the filter could not strongly classify as not spam or spam. Leave empty to not prepend emails. Unsure emails are considered legitimate emails, you can use this tag to have them stand out and to report them as spam/not spam to further improve effectiveness of the filter.
Quarantine responseIf set to Rejected, a notice will be sent to the sending server that their email was rejected, if the email that was sent ends up going into quarantine. If set to Accepted, the mail server will respond that an email was accepted even though it has entered quarantine.
