# Backup your website

We recommend you backup your website files and [databases](https://support.netregistry.com.au/articles/nr/Backup-a-MySQL-database/) on a regular basis and keep those files in a secure place. When performing any upgrades to applications or making simple changes to a site, there is always a chance that something may go wrong. By backing up your files regularly, you protect yourself against any unfortunate incidents and allows you to restore your files quickly should anything goes wrong.

We perform our own regular backups to customers files, however we only keep these backups for a limited amount of time. The backups we take are for disaster recovery purposes (in case our systems fail) and, as such, individual account restorations are time consuming and costly.

We can perform individual account restorations upon request, however this service incurs additional fees and takes longer than restoring from a self taken backup would. We recommend all customers follow the instructions below and regularly take a backup of their website files.

### Backup a cPanel Hosting website

Instructions on how to perform a one off full backup, stored locally (Please note: You cannot restore from a full back up through cPanel):

1. Log into the Console
2. Find and click on your cPanel service
3. Click the **Backups** icon
4. Click **Download or generate a full website backup**
5. You have a few options for the location for the backup to be saved. Home directory is the easiest for once off
6. Email address will be used to notify the email listed when the backup is completed
7. Click **Generate Backup** when you are ready

Instructions on how to perform a partial backup your cPanel Hosting website:

1. Log into the Console
2. Find and click on your cPanel service
3. Click the **Backups** icon
4. Click on **\[Home Directory]** located underneath the **Partial Backups** area
5. This will begin a backup of all your website files to your computer as a Tarball file (.tar.gz)

**JetBackup**

The cPanel backup wizard walks you step by step through the back up process. This tool is useful for first time users or people who need more information on the steps in the backup process. It can be found within the cPanel interface.
